زندگی وی با برخورد با یک شینیگامی یا خدای مرگ که بر جریان گذر ارواح از دنیای انسانها به دنیای بعد از مرگ نظارت میکنند بکلی دگرگون میشود. ایچیگو با روکیا کوچیکی (به انگلیسی: Rukia Kuchiki) که یک شینیگامی و بدنبال یک هولو (به انگلیسی: Hollow) (یک روح گمگشته شرور) است، برخورد میکند. روکیا در حین نبرد با هولو بسختی مجروح میشود و بعنوان راه حل سعی میکند تا نیمی از ریاتسو (به انگلیسی: Reiatsu) یا نیروی روح خود را به ایچیگو بدهد تا او را قادر به نابودی هولو بسازد ولی در اتفاقی عجیب ایچیگو با گرفتن تقریبا تمامی نیروی روکیا تبدیل به یک شینیگامی میشود و میتواند براحتی هولو را شکست دهد. روکیا که بیشتر نیروی خود را از دست داده است مجبور است مدتی در دنیای انسانها ماندگار شود تا بتواند نیروی خود را بازیابد. در همین حین ایچیگو هم مجبور است بجای روکیا وظیفه شینیگامی بودن را بر عهده بگیرد و با نبرد با هولوهای متعدد ارواح انسانها را به دنیای بعد از مرگ که جامعه ارواح نام دارد رهنمون کند.
مدتی میگذرد و شینیگامی‌های مافوق روکیا از اعمال و محل زندگی او که هنوز به جامعه ارواح بازنگشته با خبر میشوند و به جرم عمل غیر قانونی واگذاری قدرتش به ایچیگو او را دستگیر و به مرگ محکوم میکنند. ایچیگو با وجودی که نتوانست مانع از دستگیری روکیا شود تصمیم میگیرد با کمک چند نفر از همکلاسیهای خود که دارای قدرتهای فراطبیعی هستند، یک شینیگامی سابق به نام کیسوکه اوراها (به انگلیسی: Kisuke Urahara) و یوریوچی شیهویین (به انگلیسی: Yoruichi Shihōin)، به جامعه ارواح سفر کند و روکیا را از مرگ نجات دهد. به محض رسیدن به جامعه ارواح، ایچیگو و گروهش مجبور به درگیری با زبده‌ترین افراد از ارتش شینیگامی‌ها میشوند. بعد از مجموعه ای از اتفاقات آشکار میشود که اعدام روکیا و عملیات نجات او توسط ایچیگو همگی جزیی از نقشه بزرگ سُسوکه آیزن (به انگلیسی: Sōsuke Aizen) (یک شینیگامی عالیرتبه که بنظر می آمد به قتل رسیده است) برای غصب کنترل جامعه ارواح بوده است. آیزن به شینیگامی‌ها خیانت میکند و با اسپاداها (به انگلیسی: Espadas) (قوی‌ترین هولوها) متحد میشود. از اینجا به بعد آیزن تبدیل به شخصیت منفی اصلی مجموعه میشود و شینیگامی‌ها هم با ایچیگو به اتحاد میرسند.
از این نقطه به بعد، بلیچ جنگ بین شینیگامی‌ها و آیزن را روایت میکند که قصد دارد با جمع آوری ارواح مردم شهر کاراکورا (محل تولد ایچیگو)، وسیله ای به اوکن (به انگلیسی: Ôken) خلق کند که او را قادر میسازد راهی برای رسیدن به محل اقامت پادشاه جامعه ارواح پیدا کند.

Cartoon Network began airing Bleach in the United States as part of its Adult Swim block on September 9, 2006. Viz Media has licensed the manga for English-language publication in the United States and Canada, and has released 34 bound volumes as of March 2011 as well as published chapters of Bleach in its Shonen Jump magazine since November 2007. Viz Media released the first Bleach film, Bleach: Memories of Nobody, on DVD in North America on October 14, 2008. The second film, Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion, was released on September 15, 2009.
Volumes of the manga have sold more than 50 million copies in Japan, and have reached the top of manga sales in the United States. The anime adaptation has been similarly received; it was rated as the fourth most popular anime television series in Japan in 2006 and held a position amongst the top ten anime in the United States from 2006 to 2008. The series received the Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen demographic in 2005, and is among the best-selling manga properties in both Japan and the United States.
