Horror Manga Artist Junji Ito Draws for Inside Thriller Film

Acclaimed horror manga creator Junji Ito brought his iconic style to create artwork for the independent thriller film Inside. The Spanish film is a remake of the French horror film À l'intérieur released in 2007. Junji Itō commented on his impression of the new film. He said, "This is the scariest situation for a pregnant woman! It was a thriller reminiscent of the work of Alfred Hitchcock. Also the motives of the murderer are complex, it had me shivering even after the film ended."

Inside is opening in theaters in Japan on July 13.

Junji Ito's horror stories were the subject of the Junji Ito "Collection" anime. Ito's work has been adapted into live-action films before, like Uzumaki and Tomie, Viz Media has released Ito's Tomie story collection, Gyo, Uzumaki, Fragments of Horror, and most recently Shiver in North America. The company recently licensed Ito's Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection manga. Kodansha USA has released his not-so-scary true story manga about learning to live with his fiance's cats under the title Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu, and Vertical licensed and released The Dissolving Classroom.

Overlord Inspires 'Mass for the Dead' Smartphone RPG

An official website for the first smartphone game based on Kugane Maruyama's Overlord novel series opened on Sunday. The "alternate world dark fantasy RPG," titled Mass for the Dead, is slated for this year.

The game will be free to play with in-app purchases. The website is currently holding a preregistration campaign.

Maruyama began the original light novel series online in 2010, and Kadokawa's Enterbrain imprint then published it in print with illustrations by so-bin in 2012. The series has over 2.5 million copies in print in Japan. Yen Press is releasing the novel series in North America. The company is also releasing Hugin Miyama and Satoshi Ōshio's manga adaptation.

The first 13-episode Overlord television anime series premiered in Japan in July 2015. Funimation streamed the anime series as it aired in Japan, and the company released the series with an English dub on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in November 2016. The second series premiered in January and ended on April 3. Crunchyroll streamed the second series as it aired, and Funimation streamed an English dub.

The third anime series will premiere on July 10.

The novels and anime's story takes place in the year 2138 when virtual reality gaming is booming. Yggdrasil, a popular online game, is quietly shut down one day. However, the protagonist Momonga decides to not log out. Momonga is then transformed into the image of a skeleton as "the most powerful wizard." The world continues to change, with non-player characters (NPCs) beginning to feel emotion. Having no parents, friends, or place in society, this ordinary young man Momonga then strives to take over the new world the game has become.
