Vinland Saga Anime Unveils Main Staff, Visual
The official website for the television anime of Makoto Yukimura's Vinland Saga manga unveiled the anime's main staff and first visual on Monday.
Shuhei Yabuta (Inuyashiki Last Hero director, Attack on Titan 3D director) is directing the anime at Wit Studio (Attack on Titan, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, The Ancient Magus' Bride). Hiroshi Seko (Banana Fish, Ajin - Demi-Human) is supervising the series scripts and writing them with Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil). Takahiko Abiru (Hunter × Hunter animation director) is designing the characters. Bamboo is in charge of the art, and MADBOX is in charge of special effects.
The tagline accompanying the visual reads, "Cast your sword aside." The visual shows the main character Thorfinn on a Viking ship in a raging snowstorm.
Kodansha Comics released the manga's 10th omnibus volume, which includes volumes 19 and 20, on June 5. The company describes the story:
Thorfinn is son to one of the Vikings' greatest warriors, but when his father is killed in battle by the mercenary leader Askeladd, he swears to have his revenge. Thorfinn joins Askeladd's band in order to challenge him to a duel, and ends up caught in the middle of a war for the crown of England. From the creator of the classic Planetes manga comes this epic, highly-anticipated tale.
Yukimura launched the series in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine in 2005, but Kodansha moved the series to Afternoon later that year. The series has more than 5 million copies in print. The manga received the Best General Manga award in Kodansha's 36th Annual Manga Awards in 2012. The series won the Grand Prize in the manga division in the Ministry of Cultural Affairs' 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2009.
The anime will air on television and stream exclusively on Amazon Prime both in Japan and overseas next year.
Kodansha Comics began publishing the series in North America in 2013. Kodansha Comics had reported in 2015 that it could stop its English release of the manga after the seventh omnibus volume. The publisher explained at the time that it hopes that it will "be able to license the next arc, but it's up in the air at the moment." The company then told ANN in 2016, "we are not adding any further volumes after Book Eight to our schedule at this time."
