آن قدر در منجلاب فساد و خلافکاری فرورفته بودم که حتی به دوست قمار بازم نیز خیانت کردم. دلم به همین خوشگذرانی‌ها و روابط نامتعارف با پسران غریبه خوش بود در حالی که آینده خودم را فراموش کرده بودم. روزی که به اتهام سرقت دستگیر شدم تازه فهمیدم جوانی که قرار بود همراه و شریکم در زندگی باشد یک سارق حرفه‌ای است که ...

خراسان نوشت: زن ۲۷ ساله که از شدت خماری نمی‌توانست پلک‌هایش را بالا نگه دارد، بعد از آن که آخرین پک را به ته مانده سیگارش زد مقابل مشاور و مددکار اجتماعی کلانتری سناباد مشهد قرار گرفت و درحالی که گاهی برای دقایقی به خواب می‌رفت در تشریح ماجرای زندگی‌اش گفت: پدرم با مغازه کوچکی که در منطقه قلعه ساختمان مشهد دارد مخارج ۹ فرزند و خانواده‌اش را تامین می‌کرد. با آن که مادرم خانه‌دار بود همه خواهر و برادرهایم را سروسامان داد به طوری که هرکدام از آنها به دنبال سرنوشت و زندگی خودشان رفتند و طعم خوشبختی را چشیدند.

در این میان من که ته تغاری خانواده بودم هیچ علاقه‌ای به درس و مدرسه نداشتم، از همان دوران کودکی با پسرهای محله مأنوس بودم و با آنها داخل کوچه و خیابان ترقه بازی می‌کردم و در رفتارهای هیجانی از آن‌ها پیشی می‌گرفتم به همین خاطر بیشتر اوقاتم را در کوچه و خیابان می‌گذراندم تا این که به ناچار با ضعیف شدن درس‌هایم در مقطع راهنمایی ترک تحصیل کردم.

۱۵ ساله بودم که به اصرار خانواده‌ام به خواستگاری علی پاسخ مثبت دادم و پای سفره عقد نشستم. او شش سال از من بزرگ‌تر بود و در یک کارخانه تولیدی کار می‌کرد. علی جوانی مؤدب بود که نه رفیق بازی می‌کرد و نه دور و بر مواد مخدر می‌رفت ولی من هیچ احساس و علاقه‌ای به او نداشتم با آن که از دید اطرافیانم پسر خوبی بود ولی از نگاه من که دختری ماجراجو بودم بسیار ساکت و آرام جلوه می‌کرد به همین دلیل نمی‌توانستم علاقه‌ای به او داشته باشم.

این بود که زندگی مشترک ما فقط ۱۱ ماه طول کشید و من از او طلاق گرفتم. هیچ کس از اطرافیانم این ماجرا را باور نمی کرد و من در پاسخ آن ها فقط می گفتم علاقه‌ای به همسرم نداشتم. از آن روز به بعد به دختری لجباز و خودسر تبدیل شدم تا جایی که دیگر خانواده ام نیز دست از حمایت من برداشتند و کاری به کارم نداشتند. در همین روزها بود که در شبکه‌های اجتماعی عضو یک گروه خلافکار شدم و با آنها در پارتی‌ها و دورهمی‌های شبانه شرکت می کردم و به هر رابطه‌ای تن می‌دادم تا این که با همین دوستانم مصرف سیگار و شیشه را شروع کردم.

مدتی بعد و در حالی که به همراه اعضای گروه در پاتوقی واقع در منطقه سیدی مشهد جمع شده بودیم و در حالت‌های غیرطبیعی به سر می‌بردیم توسط نیروهای انتظامی دستگیر شدم و چند ماه از عمرم را پشت میله‌های زندان گذراندم. وقتی دوباره رنگ آزادی را دیدم، نزد یکی از دوستانم به نام سعیده رفتم. او همه اموال، خانه و لوازم آن را در یک بازی قمار در همین پارتی‌های شبانه باخته بود. آن شب من پای گریه‌ها و درد دل‌های او نشستم و قرار شد روز بعد با دوست پسرش حرف بزنم تا نزد سعیده بازگردد و با هم ازدواج کنند.

وقتی با داریوش در پارک قرار ملاقات گذاشتم چند ساعت با هم صحبت کردیم و در میان همین قرارها بود که داریوش با بیان این که عاشقم شده است به من پیشنهاد دوستی داد من هم که شیفته ظاهر و چرب زبانی‌هایش شده بودم به دوستم خیانت کردم و سوار بر خودروی داریوش به مسافرت شمال رفتیم درحالی که خانواده داریوش با ازدواج ما کاملا مخالف بودند ولی دل من به همین خوشگذرانی‌ها خوش بود.

در میان همین ارتباطات نامتعارف مجبور شدم سقط جنین کنم با این حال وقتی نیروهای گشت کلانتری ما را سوار بر خودرو دستگیر کردند تازه فهمیدم که داریوش دارای چند سابقه سرقت است و من نیز سوار خودروی سرقتی بوده‌ام و ...

به دستور سرگرد قدیمی (رئیس کلانتری سناباد) متهمان به سرقت تحویل مراجع قضایی شدند تا تحقیقات بیشتری درباره سرقت‌های احتمالی دیگر آنان صورت گیرد.

دستگیری کیف قاپان حرفه ای در تهرانپارس

رئیس پایگاه چهارم پلیس آگاهی تهران بزرگ از دستگیری دو سارق کیف قاپ که پس از طرح دوستی چند روزه با تعدادی از کسبه شرق تهران اقدام به نقد کردن پول های داخل حساب مالباختگان با دستگاه کارتخوان این افراد کرده بودند، خبر داد.

به گزارش ایسنا، چندی پیش با تشکیل پرونده مقدماتی با موضوع کیف قاپی، زن جوانی برای پیگیری شکایت خود به پایگاه چهارم پلیس آگاهی تهران بزرگ مراجعه کرد و در اظهاراتش به کارآگاهان گفت: حوالی ساعت ۲۱:۳۰ روز ۱۳ شهریورماه حین عبور ازخیابان دوسرنشین یک موتور سیکلت طرح هوندا کیف دستی اش حاوی مبلغ ۹۰۰ هزار تومان وجه نقد، گوشی تلفن همراه و دو عدد کارت عابر بانک حاوی رمز را سرقت کرده و در ادامه از کارتها مبلغ ۱۵ میلیون ریال نیز برداشت کرده‌اند.

کارآگاهان با بررسی تراکنش مالی حساب مالباخته موفق به شناسایی یک مغازه میوه فروشی در تهرانپارس شدند و در مراجعه به این مغازه و درجریان تحقیقات، صاحب مغازه به آنها گفت: جوانی با معرفی خود به نام کریمی که چندین نوبت برای خرید میوه به مغازه ام آمده و به این واسطه او را می شناسم به میوه فروشی مراجعه کرد و با اعلام اینکه مشکلی برای خانواده اش پیش آمده و نیاز به وجه نقد دارد از دستگاه پوز داخل مغازه استفاده کرد و طی دو نوبت مبالغ ۵۰۰ هزار تومان و روز بعد مبلغ یک میلیون تومان دیگر به وی پرداخت کردم.

کارآگاهان پایگاه چهارم پلیس آگاهی با بررسی تصاویر به دست آمده از دوربین مداربسته مغازه میوه فروشی موفق به شناسایی تصویر یکی از سارقان شده و اقدامات خود برای شناسایی و دستگیری او را در دستورکار خود قرار دادند که پرونده مشابه دیگری که در آن با همین شیوه و شگرد از حساب مالباخته ای دیگر در یک مغازه میوه فروشی پول برداشت شده بود به پایگاه چهارم پلیس آگاهی واصل شد.

با مراجعه کارآگاهان به این مغازه، تصویر به دست آمده از مغازه میوه فروشی منطقه تهرانپارس به رؤیت صاحبه مغازه میوه فروشی اخیر رسید و او نیز بلافاصه تصویر سارق را با نامی دیگر مورد شناسایی قرار داد.

اقدامات پلیسی برای دستگیری دو سارق کیف قاپ حرفه‌ای که با طرح دوستی با صاحبان مغازه به ویژه مغازه های میوه فروشی اقدام به برداشت و در واقع سرقت پول از حساب مالباختگان کرده بودند در دستورکار کارآگاهان پایگاه چهارم پلیس آگاهی تهران بزرگ قرارگرفت و سرانجام با شناسایی آخرین محل تردد سارقان در یک مغازه میوه فروشی در محدوده شرق تهران، این محل تحت کنترل و مراقبت نامحسوس کارآگاهان قرار گرفت و در تاریخ ۲۹ شهریورماه با حضور یکی ازسارقان به نام شهرام ۲۹ ساله در میوه فروشی، نسبت به دستگیری وی اقدام و موتورسیکلت طرح هوندا ۱۲۵مورد استفاده در سرقت ها نیز توقیف شد.

در بازرسی اولیه، کارآگاهان موفق به کشف چندین کارت عابر بانک متعلق به سایر افراد شدند که متهم دستگیر شده در همان تحقیقات اولیه صراحتا به مسروقه بودن آنها اعتراف کرد. با اعتراف صریح شهرام و شناسایی همدست وی به نام جمشید ۲۹ ساله ، کارآگاهان با شناسایی مخفیگاه متهم دوم پرونده در محدوده میدان رهبر اقدام به دستگیری جمشید کرده و هر دو متهم به پایگاه چهارم پلیس آگاهی تهران بزرگ منتقل شدند.

براساس اعلام مرکز اطلاع رسانی پلیس آگاهی تهران بزرگ، سرهنگ کارآگاه مرتضی نثاری، رئیس پایگاه چهارم پلیس آگاهی تهران بزرگ، با اعلام این خبر گفت: با توجه به اعتراف صریح متهمان به سرقت های متعدد کیف قاپی و قاپ زنی ، قرار قانونی از سوی مقام قضایی صادر و متهمان برای انجام تحقیقات تکمیلی و شناسایی دیگر جرایم ارتکابی در اختیار پایگاه چهارم پلیس آگاهی تهران بزرگ قرار دارد.

وی با اشاره به این پرونده به شهروندان هشدار داد که در زمان انجام معامله پرداخت پول از طریق عابربانک از سوی افراد، درخواست کارت شناسایی معتبر برای مطابقت مشخصات صاحب کارت با مشخصات درج شده بر روی کارت عابربانک به منزله بی احترامی به افراد نیست.

ناسا وجود "حیات بیگانه" را بررسی می‌کند

ناسا وجود "حیات بیگانه" را بررسی می‌کند

هم‌اکنون "ناسا" در تلاش است که به بررسی و تحقیق حیات در خارج از منظومه شمسی بپردازد و این راستا در حال برگزاری یک کارگاه آموزشی است.

به گزارش ایسنا و به نقل از دیلی‌میل، ناسا این روزها در حال برگزاری یک کارگاه آموزشی در "هوستون" است تا تلاش‌های کنونی برای پیدا کردن شواهد حیات در خارج از منظومه شمسی را بررسی کند. شواهد جدیدی که در این کارگاه‌ها بررسی می‌شود، از اعماق فضا و مناطق جدید کشف شده به دست آمده است و می‌تواند به کشف یک تمدن پیشرفته منجر شوند.

تاریخ برگزاری کارگاه از امروز بیست‌وششم تا بیست‌وهشت سپتامبر است.

ناسا اعلام کرد، اگر این نشانه‌ها و سیگنال‌ها مشاهده شوند، این امکان برای ما میسر می‌شود که به وجود زندگی بیگانگان در نقطه‌ای از کیهان پی ببریم.

ناسا بهترین علائم وجود حیات را سیگنال‌های رادیویی می‌داند که بسیاری از آن‌ها به طور کامل کشف نشده‌اند.

کاوشگرهای "کپلر" و "تس" ناسا به بررسی حیات در خارج از منظومه شمسی پرداخته‌اند.

"کپلر" تلسکوپ فضایی ساخت ناسا است که با هدف کشف سیارات فراخورشیدی مشابه زمین به فضا پرتاب شد که بیش از ۲هزار و ۷۰۰ سیاره فراخورشیدی با امکان وجود حیات را کشف کرد که حدود ۳۰ تا از آنها در کمربند حیات به دور ستاره خود می‌چرخند.

چندی پیش سوخت این تلسکوپ تمام شد و عمر آن به پایان رسید. پس از آن، ناسا ماهواره "تس" را در تاریخ ۱۹ آوریل سال جاری با استفاده از موشک "فالکون ۹"(Falcon ۹) به فضا پرتاب کرد و به نحوی "تس" جایگزین کپلر شد.

انتظار می‌رود که این فضاپیما موفق به پیدا کردن بیش از ۲۰ هزار سیاره دیگر شود. تس چند روز پیش موفق به کشف ۲سیاره فراخورشیدی شد.

محققان دانشگاه "ام‌آی‌تی"(MIT) اعلام کردند که یکی از سیارات شناخته شده "Pi Mensae c" است و به عنوان سیاره "ابر زمین" شناخته می‌شود و ۶۰ سال نوری با ما فاصله دارد و هر ۶.۳ روز یک‌ بار خورشید خود را دور می‌زند.

سیاره دیگر نیز " LHS ۳۸۴۴ b" نام گرفته است و به عنوان "زمین داغ" شناخته می‌شود و ۴۹ سال نوری با ما فاصله دارد و هر ۱۱ ساعت یک‌ بار خورشید خود را دور می‌زند.

دانشمندان قادرند حتی از روی زمین نیز سیگنال‌هایی را که از منابع دور و فراتر از آسمان ما وجود دارند شناسایی کنند.

ناسا متذکر شد، هیچ‌کس از احتمال وجود حیات بیگانگان در سیارات فراخورشیدی خبر ندارد ولی ما می‌دانیم که این احتمال صفر هم نیست.

چند دهه است که محققان به بررسی شواهد حضور بیگانگان پرداخته‌اند. این بررسی‌ها در پروژه‌های علمی "جست‌وجوی هوش فرازمینی"( SETI) ناسا صورت گرفته است که از سال ۱۹۷۱ آغاز شده‌اند.

ناسا اظهار کرد، ما برای ثابت کردن حیات فرازمینی به سیگنال‌هایی نیاز داریم که هنوز ناشناخته باقی مانده‌اند.

به عنوان مثال، ممکن است بسیاری از فرکانس‌های رادیویی در اتمسفر وجود داشته‌ باشند که از منابع زمینی انتشار یافته‌اند.

ناسا تلاش خود برای بررسی وجود بیگانگان را ادامه خواهد داد و در این زمینه سرمایه‌گذاری‌ خواهد کرد.

Web Manga 'Otona no Bouguya-san' Gets Anime Series

An official website for an anime adaptation of the web manga Otona no Bouguya-san (Armor Shop for Ladies & Gentlemen) has launched. The series is drawn by Fumi Ayamiya and has been publishing on the Ganma! manga application since September 2017, and the 22nd chapter will be released on Thursday.

Otona no Bouguya-san will be streamed on the Ganma! application on Tuesdays at 12:00 a.m. beginning October 9. It will also air in a five-minute time slot on Tokyo MX on the same day at 1:25 a.m. for 12 episodes total. The anime will also be streamed on the AbemaTV platform.

TV Anime 'Himote House' Announces Additional Cast Members

The official Twitter account of the upcoming TV anime Himote House has announced two additional cast members for minor roles in the series. The anime will air on Mondays at 12:45 a.m. on BS11 beginning October 8, followed by Tokyo MX and J:COM. GYAO! and other streaming platforms will also stream it.

The High School Life of a Fudanshi Manga Ends

Manga creator Atami Michinoku published the last chapter of the The High School Life of a Fudanshi (Fudanshi Kōkō Seikatsu) manga on September 7. The manga's fifth and final compiled book volume shipped on Tuesday.

Seven Seas Entertainment is publishing the manga in English, and it describes the manga:

Ryo Sakaguchi has a deep, dark secret: he's a fudanshi—a boy obsessed with BL. While he has trouble understanding how others don't find the same bliss he does from his unusual hobbies, that doesn't make it any easier for Ryo to buy his precious manga from the “girls” section of the store, or any simpler explaining the world of boys' love, shipping wars, and doujinshi circles to his best friend Nakamura. Will Ryo find other fanboys to share his hobby with, or is he doomed to sit alone on his throne of BL romance?

Michinoku launched the manga on Ichijinsha's web site Zero-Sum Online in May 2015. Seven Seas Entertainment released the third volume in English on January 9.

The manga inspired a television anime that premiered on July 2016. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan. Funimation began offering the series for digital purchase in August.

Mihara Shouma is a first-year high school student. Shouma hasn’t seen his good friend Atsushi in 3.5 years, ever since they lost contact with each other after elementary school. One day, Atsushi gets in contact with Shouma to invite him to a rare festival, so they can meet up and talk. Shouma goes to the “Tanabata Seven Night Festival” deep in the mountains, but Atsushi is not there. Instead, a girl named Shiori who also has a person she wants to meet is there. بیگ بنگ: آژانس فضایی ژاپن اعلام کرد دو کاوشگرش در تاریخ ۲۱ سپتامبر ۲۰۱۸ از سفینه بدون سرنشین خود جدا شدند و دقایقی بعد با موفقیت بر سیارک “ریوگو” فرود آمدند.

به گزارش بیگ بنگ به نقل از ایسنا، ژاپن برای اولین‌بار موفق شد دو کاوشگر را به صورت همزمان بر روی یک سیارک فرود آورد. آژانس اکتشافات هوافضای ژاپن(JAXA) تایید کرد که هر دو ربات آزمایش سیارک خود، یعنی نسل دوم فضاپیمای “MINERVA-II1” که به نام‌های “Rover-1” و “Rover-2” نام‌گذاری شده‌اند، در تاریخ ۲۱ سپتامبر ۲۰۱۸ به طور موفقیت آمیزی از فضاپیمای بدون سرنشین هایابوسا۲ جدا شدند و بر روی سیارک “ریوگو” فرود آمدند و اکنون در حال ارسال عکس هستند.

Tomo-chan Is a Girl! Manga Ends With 8th Volume

Manga creator Fumita Yanagida revealed in a Twitter post on Monday that the eighth volume of the Tomo-chan is a Girl! (Tomo-chan wa Onna no Ko!) manga will be the last volume.

Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the manga, and it describes the story:

Boyish high school girl Aizawa Tomo finally manages to tell her childhood friend Jun that she's got a crush on him. Unfortunately, her confession goes right over his head—he didn't even realize she was a girl until junior high, and even now, Jun still thinks of her as a bro! How can Tomo-chan possibly convince him otherwise and win Jun's heart?

Yanagida launched the manga as a four-panel manga on Seikaisha's "Twi4" (Twitter 4-koma) Twitter account, beginning in April 2015, and it continues in the company's Saizensen website. The manga won Da Vinci and streaming service Niconico's second Tsugi ni Kuru Web Manga Awards in 2015. Kodansha publishes the manga's print volumes, and shipped the manga's seventh volume on September 12. Seven Seas Entertainment published the first volume on September 11.

Cast Members of TV Anime 'Pet' Revealed

The official website of the anime adaptation of Ranjou Miyake's remastered edition of Pet manga announced main cast members on Monday. Directed by Takahiro Omori (Durarara!!) with series composition by Sadayuki Murai (Boogiepop wa Warawanai: Boogiepop Phantom) and Junichi Hayama (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken) in charge of character designs at Geno Studio, the anime will debut in 2019. Amazon's Prime Video platform will also stream the anime exclusively in Japan and overseas.

A two-part stage play adaptation for the series was also announced. The first part, Pet: Kowareta Suisou (Pet: Broken Aquarium), will run at the Sougetsu Hall in Tokyo from December 5-9. Pet: Niji no Aru Basho (Pet: The Place Where the Rainbow Is), the second part, is scheduled to run next year. Keisuke Ueda will reprise his role as Hiroki in the stage play.

The psychological thriller manga was serialized for five volumes in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits weekly magazine in 2002-2003. A remastered version of the volumes was published by Enterbrain (now Kadokawa) under its Beam Comix imprint between 2009-2010.

After three consecutive episodes of classic Gintama hijinks, the series once again puts on its serious face as the real final battle's stakes are laid out. Now reunited with Takasugi, Gintoki reveals what he's been up to the past two years. Never convinced that Utsuro was truly gone, the silver-haired samurai searched for signs of him at every Altana gate in Japan. While visiting a seaside Golden Dragon shrine, the head priest revealed the existence of an infant version of Yoshida Shoyo, who had gradually materialized in the gate the shrine worshipped. For a period of months, Gintoki traveled with the child as he rapidly aged into a mute young boy. When the duo was ambushed by a group of Naraku, the boy spoke and revealed that he remembered Gintoki from his previous life before being captured and entrusting Gin with his heart.

Gintoki isn't the only one with important info to share. As Takasugi reveals, in the closing moments of the war, he'd attempted to finish off the deformed, undying remnant of the Tendoshu before being mortally wounded by some Liberation Army remnants who quickly made off with the Tendoshu's remains. In order to survive, Shinsuke stabbed himself through the heart with a sword laced with Oboro's ashes, thus imbuing himself with the latter's healing abilities. However, as was the case with Oboro, said abilities are gradually weakening, and Takasugi is slowly dying.

Back in Edo, Shijaku briefs Donald Zarump on the Tendoshu's master plan. In the years following the war, the Tendoshu have been experimenting with Utsuro's immortal blood in the hope of finding the key to immortality. Taking advantage of the countless people who lost loved ones during Utsuro's initial Terminal attacks, the Tendoshu have founded a new religion that uses a phoenix as its symbol and promises its followers eternal life. The terrorist incidents occurring across the galaxy can all be tied back to this religion, and large amounts of Altana have been stolen during each attack. With an attack on Edo imminent, Gintoki and Takasugi arrive in the city and proceed to meet up with some old friends.

Much like The Battle on Rakuyo's opening chapter, this week's installment is essentially an episode-length info dump, albeit a consistently fascinating one. With so many game-changing revelations packed into a single episode, it's sometimes difficult to keep all the pertinent details together. Viewers are given virtually no time to process each new development before several more pop up, which has been a problem at various points throughout the show's endgame stage. Since the edge-of-your-seat battle against Utsuro was billed as a “series climax,” it's strange to see the show's original Big Bads reemerge as a legitimate threat, but their grand plan is interesting enough to justify further examination, and this storyline may provide Utsuro/Shoyo with a chance at redemption. Also, this appears to be opening the door for at least a cour's worth of new material, though it's unlikely to be produced in the near future in light of the manga's run being extended.

Episode 365 is also a prime example of Gintama's propensity for switching gears at the drop of a hat. As recently as last week, it felt like we were watching the Gintama of old, but this latest offering is a somber affair from beginning to end. (There were only two jokes.) Although there are likely many more laughs on the horizon, episodes like this are a stark reminder of the effects the events of the past few arcs have had on the show's world and its inhabitants. Losing Shoyo and growing apart from Takasugi have always factored heavily into Gintoki's character arc, and the fact that he's on the verge of losing them both for good has got be weighing on him. Although Gin has always been rather sullen and deadpan (usually for comedic purposes), he wrestles with a wave of conflicting emotions while traveling with Kid Shoyo. Shortly after being entrusted with the child, he strongly considers killing him—and comes perilously close to doing so. Behind all the wackiness, Gintoki has always been at war with himself for killing Shoyo, and the emergence of Utsuro compounded those feelings exponentially. Gin and Takasugi embarking on another quest to rescue their adoptive father is a great way to bring the overarching plot full-circle and possibly assuage Gintoki's deep-seated guilt. Shinpachi hits the nail on the head when he opines that he doesn't know what he'd do if someone he loved became the entire world's enemy—but he knows he'd want to see him again.

A reflective, emotional, somewhat overcrowded installment, episode 365 sets the stage for Gintama's true climax. Although our heroes put everything on the line to defeat Utsuro and the Altana Liberation Army, another battle with galactic implications is right around the corner. Once again, the time has come for the Kabuki District's finest to suit up and defend their home planet.

One Piece - Episode 854 [Review]

When Luffy first pulled Katakuri into the mirror world, it was done with the implication that neither of them would have an easy way back to the Sunny. Luffy was willfully facing a challenge where he'd not only have to beat Katakuri in a one-on-one fight, but he'd have to beat any other Charlotte siblings who might get in his way once it's time to find a new mirror elsewhere in Totto Land and find the way back to his crew. The hiccup is that there's more than one mirror on the Sunny, and the Big Mom family has easier access to them than he does, so using a loose shard from the original mirror like a phone, Luffy has to command his crew to destroy any extraneous exits from the outside, thus helping him double down on his crazy gamble.

After surviving Big Mom's tidal wave, the Sunny crew is momentarily in the clear. The enemy assumes that the Straw Hats are dead, and Big Mom gets distracted on her rampage and steers herself towards the delicious-looking Nuts Island. There's a significant release in tension that leaves the Thousand Sunny side of the chase a little limp, since they're basically free to sail off and hide until Sanji has the cake ready, though the shift comes with Luffy's fight becoming even more dire. He lies to his crew and tells them everything's going to be okay before their communication gets cut-off, when in reality he's getting his ass kicked by an opponent who he'll have to deal with for the ten-plus hours it takes to bake a giant cake.

So since we're going to be spending a lot of time with Charlotte Katakuri, let's get to know him, shall we? Brulee is very quick to brag about his outrageously silly backstory this week—not only has he never lost a fight, he's never once laid on his back! He came out of the womb standing up, and this obviously true legend (no need to look it up, there are no lies here) is supposed to be evidence of true nobility, coolness, and masculinity. Katakuri doesn't seem like to type to brag on his own behalf, but he is demonstrably much stronger than Luffy, so much so that it barely feels like he's trying in this fight until he gets mad at Luffy for trying to strike his siblings.

We get a brief return of the Germa 66 subplot this week, though I had forgotten they were even still in this story and not a lot has changed in their ongoing skirmish with the Big Mom pirates, but there was an interesting anime-only detail where Charlotte Bassquarte (one of the nobody Charlottes whose name you wouldn't even know if you didn't follow supplemental materials) pulls down the covering on his face to breathe fire and you get to see he's got a jagged monster mouth. It was interesting to see the anime add some flourish to the arc's motif of Charlotte children hiding a part of their true appearance, though it's a little redundant if you have even an inkling about what's going on under Katakuri's big scarf.

This is a decent episode for the Katakuri fight, but you don't reach the end feeling like a whole lot of progress is made. The biggest issue with this battle is that it gets repetitive by following the same basic beats: Luffy attacks, Katakuri dodges. Luffy attacks again, Katakuri copies his move but bigger. Rinse and repeat. This week introduces Katakuri's trident into the mix, but now is about the time we'd want to see a shift in the power dynamic between the two. Thankfully, the moment-to-moment pacing is much more exciting than last week, so as bare bones as this episode is, it still manages to be enjoyable enough.

My Hero Academia - Episode 62 [Review]

With the Provisional License Exams over, MHA's third season is in a funky spot with having to pace its final episodes, which are more of a prologue for next season's arc than a finale in their own right. Since this series tends to alternate between more epic stories and low-key exam arcs, it's becoming a pattern for these seasons to be front-heavy. It's negligible in the big picture, but I'm excited to see what's next and I'm not ready to have to wait on season four!

The first half of this episode gives us a closer look at Twice, the kooky Deadpool-wannabe from the League of Villains. The real Twice is not at all what I expected, being more of a grizzled, sunken-eyed tough guy than a comedic goofball. His Quirk gives him the ability to duplicate things, including himself. His backstory is just straight-up the movie Multiplicity, except instead of being a fun romp for the whole family, he and his clones mercilessly killed each other, and now he lives in existential dread because he can never be sure if he's the original or not.

With Shigaraki and company, the villains of this series have routinely been vindictive, those who hate hero society and want to take it down a peg. The opening of this episode aims to shine a light on those who get lost in the shuffle of the more spectacular heroes vs. villains dilemma. For someone like Twice, the villains offer him a place to belong. He was a criminal in his past, so he was never going to be the type of person that heroes fought to protect. Twice's story is played alongside newscasters debating the merits of Endeavor as the new number one ranked hero, so this society caught between contradicting definitions of heroism is looking more and more troubled.

Heading back over to U.A. and the kids—sans Midoriya and Bakugo who are currently under suspension—are being primed on the next stage of their training, which will be hero work studies, a more intensive version of their internships. By the end of the episode, we're being introduced to a trio of upperclassmen, titled "The Big Three" (insert joke about One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach here), who are considered to be U.A.'s top students and the most likely candidates to one day take over All Might's position as the number one hero. This is another case where we've spent so much time with our 1-A kids that we forget that a world exists outside of them, meaning the series can constantly introduce new faces with "oh no, these characters are the actual strongest ones!" The most noteworthy of these three is the eccentric dead-eyed blondie who's a dead ringer for Vault Boy from Fallout/Lucas from Mother 3/Tintin.*

*Look, manga readers already took the best jokes a long time ago.

My Hero Academia's kind of stuck in exposition mode for these last two episodes, though that doesn't have to be a bad thing. I found the first half's vignette about Twice to be very effective in illustrating the state of a hero world falling apart, and I'm looking forward to getting to know The Big Three. This feels like a necessary step for the story as it digs into some nitty gritty world-building and manages to be pretty entertaining as we coast into the season's non-climax.

This week is Attack on Titan's big infodump for everyone's favorite Killer Cowboy, Kenny the Ripper. It's an interesting morsel of a much larger story that's still very much in progress, and as far as fleshing out more of Kenny's backstory and the general history of AoT's world is concerned, “Friends” gets the job done. That said, it's one of the bumpier rides the show has delivered so far this season, feeling less like a cohesive backstory episode and more like a combination of leftover scraps that, while definitely important to the bigger picture of Attack on Titan's narrative, don't necessarily fit together so neatly.

We'll start with Kenny himself, who gets the lion's share of the episode devoted to revealing how his relationships with the Reisses formed, and how his generally bleak and violent existence brought him to where he is today, dying of terrible burns under a tree while Levi watches. The opening scene sets up the most interesting thread of the episode, which is Kenny's begrudging friendship with Rod Reiss' doomed brother, Uri. In typical Attack on Titan fashion, this begins with Uri almost crushing Kenny to death with his Titan hand after Kenny fails to assassinate him, on account of the Ackermanns being exiled from society and demonized as traitors. Given how Kenny seems to respect power above all else, he convinces Uri to let him live and serve as an adviser, so thus begins a strange relationship that lasts until Uri dies and passes on the Founding Titan's power to Frieda.

This newfound power on Kenny's part leads to a couple of noteworthy developments, but “Friends” also takes some time to address Kenny's relationship with Levi, which is honestly less engaging than I expected it to be. Levi's mother was Kenny's sister, and after she died of starvation, Kenny took it upon himself to at least teach Levi how to use his Ackermann strength to cause a little chaos and get by in the Underground. To be honest, this sequence is probably more noteworthy for how much time we spend in the mysterious subterranean city that has only ever been hinted at before, as even Kenny admits that he was never cut out to be a father and just leaves Levi down there alone one day. If there are any more complications or nuances to be found in this relationship, this episode doesn't explore them, and I'll admit that I was hoping for more ground to cover between these two, especially since Kenny dies this week.

Kenny and Uri's friendship is much more compelling, although it's not necessarily due to how the pair interacted when Uri was alive. Rather, I liked how Kenny's motivation for potentially stealing the royal family's Titan abilities for himself isn't just about seeking pure power, but about trying to connect with humanity. It isn't clear if Kenny is a straight up sociopath, or if his hard life as both an Ackermann and a person forced to live in the Underground has ruined his ability to form connections with others. Either way, it seemed to Kenny that Uri became a more empathetic and emotional person as he lived with his powers over time, and part of the reason Kenny formed his Anti-Personnel Control Squad to begin with was for Kenny to see if such a transformation was possible for him too.

Even with this backstory episode, we still haven't gotten enough details about the APCS to justify their undying loyalty to a man like Kenny, who admitted to gleefully killing his followers' comrades for years before they joined up with him. The one nihilistic speech we get from the blonde girl that died in the cave collapse a couple of weeks ago wasn't quite enough to make up for that lack of development. And since Kenny and Levi have shared so little screen time, it's hard to get invested in Kenny's apparent death this week either. Knowing this show, I wouldn't be surprised if Levi secretly injected Kenny with slow-acting Titan Juice for a surprise reappearance down the line, but for now I'm considering Kenny's role in this story to be more disappointing than anything else.

The rest of the episode feels similarly rushed; we get Historia's coronation, which was nice, though I wasn't a fan of the awkward way the episode reexplained the reasoning behind Historia's gambit last week. I understand her need to assert her royal authority as quickly as possible, but it ends up making the way the team took on Rod Reiss feel even more contrived, and the way the crowd conveniently keeps shouting how impressed they were with Historia's kill was another bit of uncharacteristically lame writing. Still, the scene where everyone cheers on Historia's revenge punch for Levi was pretty cute.

Then, out of nowhere, the episode ends with a cut to Titan Reiner getting the snot kicked out of him by the Beast Titan, with the final shot showing us the mysterious blond man inside of the Beast from the end of season 2. I understand why this scene would arrive now, at the conclusion of season 3's first story arc, but it's still a janky way to reintroduce a plot point that we haven't gotten hints of for over a year. I'm looking forward to the Titans coming back into the narrative more regularly now that this coup is over, but I do think this arc started much stronger than it finished up. Even with all of the manga's fat trimmed off, I can see why this part of AoT's narrative wasn't everyone's favorite part of the story. I loved many parts of it, but it's clear the series is still figuring out how it wants to handle its more complicated long-term story beats. Historia is the Queen now at least, so I'm prepared to consider these first ten episodes a net positive overall.

Banana Fish - Episode 12 [Review]

My friends who've read the manga told me that this episode of Banana Fish would make for an exciting one, and they were not wrong. Much of it is setup for the gang warfare to come between Ash and Arthur, but there's a lot of action too, even if most is off-screen, with how much of the episode focuses on Ash eliminating his adversaries. There's also some strong character drama in expected and less-expected places, as all this violence slowly takes its toll on Ash.

One of the interesting ways the episode frames all this is setting up Yut Lung as a foil to Ash. This isn't the first time Banana Fish has done this, but the conversation between Yut Lung and Sing at the beginning of this episode really hammers their connection home. Sing remarks on the similarities between them and Yut Lung seems to agree, particularly in how they come from similarly difficult backgrounds. That gives Yut Lung insight into Ash that some other characters might not have—but like any good foil, this also highlights their differences. Yut Lung seems to take joy in hurting the people he needs to hurt, while Ash regrets this necessity of revenge. That's what makes Yut Lung one of the "bad guys" while Ash is our hero, setting up the central conflict of this episode. It also makes me wish there was more Yut Lung around than in just those early scenes.

This episode really ramps up Ash's descent into murder and darkness. To some degree it comes out of nowhere, as a way to set up a fresh conflict. Why Ash is suddenly willing to take things so far, and not consider that some of Arthur's men he's killing are cogs in the machine just like Shorter, is not explored as well as it could be. At the same time, it makes sense that Ash is consolidating his power and realizing that he can't be too choosy about his victims at this stage. Still, Eiji is worried about what he's hearing—that Ash has been killing unarmed people, people who beg for remorse. Ash has his reasons, and we know Eiji loves Ash too much not to eventually forgive him, but it does lead to real conflict between them. It also conflicts with Ash's personal desire not to let Eiji be corrupted by his cruel world.

The two boys talk about girls, and Ash ends up telling Eiji about a girl from his past he liked who was killed under suspicion of being his girlfriend. I suspect that some people might take this story as confirmation that Ash and Eiji's relationship "isn't like that," since he likes girls, but the episode makes the opposite clear. First of all, interest in the opposite sex doesn't automatically mean lack of interest in the same sex. Ash is likely intended as bisexual, and that's just fine. (It would also fit within the aesthetic and tropes of the era that influenced Akemi Yoshida. Male bisexuality was seen as trendy and glamorous in the late 1960s and 1970s.) But more importantly, this story comes up in an episode that constantly reminds us how much Eiji is in that position with Ash now. He's the person from "outside" who has a hold on Ash that nobody else does. And in his effort to protect Eiji from succumbing to that world like he has, Ash makes himself more vulnerable, in a way that someone like Yut Lung—who is only out to protect himself from further harm—is not. Everybody against Ash knows that Eiji is the way to get to him, just as this mysterious girl from Ash's past once was.

Comparing the character's past or current heterosexual desires with their same-sex ones is also a common trope in BL, the genre Banana Fish would help influence. It's a way of reinforcing that this desire is "for real," by juxtaposing it against other desires that we take for granted in that way. To be honest, as many frustrations as I have with some LGBT tropes in anime and manga, I wish more Western media representations of bi characters could take a page from that. I don't like the way it's so often used to suggest that the character is "just like straight people", but I do like how it shows the character's desires for the same and opposite sex as being on equal footing.

We also get more into the political side of the Banana Fish plot. For as many parts of the show's "MK Ultra But For Real" story feel implausible (like that Pizzagate restaurant), this sounds like something that Cold War-era America might have actually used such a drug for if they'd had it. The U.S. in that era was constantly trying to overthrow democratically-elected leaders who were seen as insufficiently supportive of the U.S. or too pro-Soviet, replacing them with right-wing dictatorships. Something like "Banana Fish" allowing them to take over the minds of local politicians, rather than having to search for someone who was already on their side, would make that even easier. The focus on "Kafghanistan" and its role in the global drug trade seems like a way to bring this into the modern War on Terror landscape, even though that would also fit right into the 1980s setting of the original manga. Since this reflects real-world geopolitics, this is a lot more interesting to me than the other aspects of the drug plot, though it's still something the show could bungle. I'm curious to see where Banana Fish takes this. What's interesting is how Ash, this kid who hasn't had much in the way of actual schooling, is so easily able to piece together this political situation.

One thing I haven't discussed as much in this series is the meaning behind the episode titles, which are all references to famous literary works. Besides the "Banana Fish" of the series title and first episode, which are references to J.D. Salinger's famous story, these episodes largely take their cue from works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and other American writers from the so-called "Lost Generation"—people who came of age in the bleak aftermath of World War I, having lost so many of their compatriots to that brutal war and the Spanish flu outbreak that accompanied it. The focus on Fitzgerald in particular, as in titles like last week's "The Beautiful and the Damned," also reinforces the "New York, city of sin" focus of the anime, as much of Fitzgerald's work focuses on the decadent lifestyles of the rich and famous in New York during the 1920s, the height of the Prohibition era. (The Beautiful and the Damned is also largely about Fitzgerald's infamously fraught marriage to his wife Zelda, so read into that what you will for an episode centering on Ash and Eiji's relationship and intimacy.) The Hemingway novel referenced this week, To Have and Have Not, focuses on a goodhearted fishing boat captain in Florida who is forced by larger economic forces into darker ventures like smuggling. The similarities to Ash's situation couldn't be more obvious.

By invoking these famous works of American literature, Banana Fish is also situating itself as sitting alongside their caliber. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to put it there yet, but there is definitely more to this criminal love story than meets the eye. Even with its pulpier elements (and it's not like Fitzgerald and Hemingway didn't indulge in those too), Banana Fish paints a compelling picture of the way that society can force otherwise good people into horrible things. There's also a bit of hope in the way it shows that love can redeem people. Eiji may be the person who brings Ash back from the brink, even when he's fake-tormenting him with Halloween pumpkin displays. Here at the halfway point of this anime adaptation, I think it's clear that this element is what gives this story such staying power.
